Churches Announces Run for State Representative; Sets up Rematch for Key Downriver Seat

WYANDOTTE — Former State Representative Jaime Churches announced on Monday, March 16th that she would challenge sitting Representative Linting in a rematch of the 2024 election for House District 27. Recently, Linting has come under fire for accepting over $5,000 in free lunches and dinners from Lansing lobbyists.

In her announcement, Churches stated, “I grew up Downriver, attended Woodhaven-Brownstown and Grosse Ile public schools, and I’m inspired to serve the community that raised me. I am the daughter of a nurse and a businessman. Also, the sister of an autoworker. I know the challenges facing our community because I’ve lived them,” Churches said, “For me, politics are personal. As a teacher, I want to promote a culture of support for the field of education where teachers feel valued and respected for the hard work they do everyday for our kids.”

Churches went on to list her accomplishments from her term in office that spanned 2023 and 2024:

  • Secured $20 Million for Grosse Ile Free Bridge Repairs

  • Secured $400,000 for Gibraltar’s lead line service replacements

  • Secured $20 Million for railroad crossing replacement in Trenton

  • Secured $10 Million for Downriver Career Tech Consortium

  • Secured $10 Million for Downriver Utility Wastewater Authority

  • Passing the Clean Energy and Jobs Act  

  • Reinstating workers’ rights and prevailing wages

  • Repealed the pension tax on our seniors 

  • Expanded the working families tax credit 

  • Amended the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include LGBTQ+ Michiganders 

  • Repealed the outdated 1931 abortion ban that made abortions a felony 

  • Required universal background checks for all firearm purchases

  • Require safe storage of firearms around children 

  • Repealed the mandatory retention law that held back Michigan’s 3rd graders

  • Secured $4.7 Million for Wyandotte’s lead line service replacements

  • Secured $2 Million for the Wyandotte DeSana Arts Building Rehabilitation

  • Secured $6.5 Million to construct a sound wall off I-75 in Southgate

House District 27 has had back-to-back close elections. In 2022, Churches defeated Robert Howey by winning 50.8 percent of the vote while Howey fell short with 49.2 percent. In 2024, Linting defeated Churches with 52.2 percent of the vote. The primary is Tuesday, August 4th and the general election is Tuesday, November 3rd.
