Teachers Honored by Governor During Teacher Appreciation Week

LANSING — This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week while honoring teachers from across the state. Whitmer issued a proclamation stating:

WHEREAS, teachers mentor, guide, and inspire students so they can reach their full potential, meet their personal goals, and grow into successful future leaders of our state and nation; and,

WHEREAS, teachers help children learn, grow, and excel so they are prepared to contribute to our society, economy, and communities in positive ways; and,

WHEREAS, along with parents, educators are mentors and role models to countless students across our state; and,

WHEREAS, many teachers go above and beyond for students by sponsoring clubs, coaching athletics, and creating a welcoming campus environment where all children can shine; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we take time to appreciate and recognize all teachers and public school employees in Michigan who shape the students of today into the leaders of tomorrow, inspire and welcome others to ascend into this honorable profession, and reaffirm our commitment to high-quality education that meets the needs of all students;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, and Garlin Gilchrist II, lieutenant governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 4 – 8, 2026, as Teacher Appreciation Week in Michigan.

“Across Michigan, teachers inspire students, open doors for opportunity, and step up every day to prepare the next generation for success,” said Governor Whitmer in a press release. “Educators also play an essential role in helping us meet our literacy goals and help Every Child Read. That’s why I’m proud of the work we’ve done to support teachers. We paid student teachers, delivered bonuses, and helped more aspiring educators get in front of the classroom. During Teacher Appreciation Week, let’s recognize the teachers who have shaped our lives and continue working together to ensure they have the support they need to help our kids thrive.”

In the same press release, Governor Whitmer listed her accomplishments supporting teachers, students and education in Michigan:

  • The only state in the country to pay every single student teacher.
  • Created the MI Future Educator Fellowship to lower barriers for aspiring educators.
  • Created the Grow Your Own program to help more school staff members get in front of a classroom.
  • Delivered funding for recruitment and retention teacher bonuses, so we can reward you for your hard work.
  • As a result of our hard work, enrollment in teacher prep programs has reached its highest point in the last decade.
