KALAMAZOO — A Kalamazoo county State Senator has joined the race for Congress – seeking to flip Michigan’s 4th Congressional District from Republican to Democrat. Sean McCann faces term limits in his current seat and will not be a able to run for re-election.
In a statement announcing his candidacy, McCann stated, “I’ll keep fighting to get your costs down, protect your Social Security and health care, and take on the special interests to actually get things done for working people — because it’s time for Washington to work for the people of Southwest Michigan.”
The 4th District is currently represented by Bill Huizenga who is also considering a run for the open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senators Gary Peters. The district covers Allegan and Van Buren counties in totality and parts of Berrien, Calhoun, Kalamazoo and Ottawa counties.
McCann graduated from Western Michigan University in 1993 with a degree in political science. He has served in various elected positions in his career:
- Kalamazoo City Commission
- Michigan State House of Representatives
- Michigan State Senate
With the passage of the Republican Budget Bill, also known by some as the Big Beautiful Bill, seats held by Republicans are at risk of flipping due to the unpopularity of the bill which is opposed by 71% of independents.
