State Budget in Limbo: Day 1

LANSING — The deadline to pass the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget came and went at midnight on October 1. Today is Day 1 of “Michigan State Budget Limbo” as the state operates on an 8-day continuing budget that was passed early in the morning and signed by Governor Whitmer.

Governor Whitmer, State Superintendent Rice Urge Michigan School Districts to Continue Free School Meals for All: Governor Whitmer and State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice sent a letter to Michigan superintendents, calling on them to continue feeding kids free school meals.

House and Senate Adjourn for the Day: Both the House and the Senate have adjourned for the day, with both chambers adding session dates for tomorrow.

Contours of Budget Deal Emerge: Free school meals would be included in a budget deal being discussed in Lansing. The deal would have a per pupil allowance of $10,050 as well as funding for school safety for both public and private schools.
