MICHIGAN — Everyday Michiganders took part in protests of the administration of President Donald Trump on Saturday. Protests took place in Michigan’s larger cities such as Detroit and Grand Rapids as well as a large protest at the Michigan State Capitol.
But protests were not limited to larger, mostly Democratic, cities. Suburbs such as Ferndale and Wyandotte in Metro Detroit saw large crowds as did rural areas such as Petoskey, Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie. While reports showed that the protests were peaceful, a small minority of counter protests attempted to cause problems at events. Those were universally shut down and deescalated by event organizers and peaceful protesters.
The well attended event was in stark contrast to the military parade in Washington, D.C. where sparse crowds and complaints about a poorly planned event overshadowed the celebration of the Army’s 250th birthday.
Reports suggest the events that took place protesting the actions of the Trump administration were among the largest in U.S. history. 11 million or more people took part in over 1,800 events across the nation.
