LANSING — Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist announced that he is suspending his campaign for Governor and will instead seek the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State. With Gilchrist dropping out of the race for Governor, the Democratic primary is down to current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
In his announcement, Gilchrist stated, “I’m a public servant, an entrepreneur, a dad, a husband, and an engineer who spent a lot of my life making government actually work for people. I’m not done with that, not by a long shot.”
Others seeking the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State are Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum, former Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli, former State Senator Adam Hollier and Assistant Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie. The nomination will be decided at the Democratic Party’s nominating convention in April.
