MICHIGAN — The DeVos-backed candidate for governor Tudor Dixon, this week, stated she believes that a child impregnated by a rapist should be forced by the government to carry the pregnancy to full term. Dixon made the remarks on a podcast hosted by Detroit journalist Charlie LeDuff.
After learning of her position, LeDuff offered up a scenario, “The question would be like, a 14-year-old who, let’s say, is a victim of abuse by an uncle, you’re saying carry that?” Dixon responded by agreeing that someone raped by their uncle should have to remain pregnant – no matter how old the victim of rape is at the time of the pregnancy. “Yeah, perfect example … okay … because I know people who are the product — a life is a life for me.”
LeDuff also asked about abortions when the health or life of the mother is at stake. Dixon doubled-down on her extremist position saying that abortions should be illegal to protect the health of the mother. She did not, however, specify when the legal moment when an illness caused by pregnancy or incomplete miscarriage becomes a situation where the life of the mother is at risk. This position would leave doctors and hospital administrators in the tough situation of trusting lawyers with medical decisions instead of doctors.
Dixon’s “callous remarks are the perfect example of how dangerous Tudor Dixon would be for Michigan families,” Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite said.
When asked about her extreme views on incest and maternal health, Dixon replied, “I’m not hiding from that.”
