Governor Gretchen Whitmer is stressing the importance of flu shots this season for Michiganders. With COVID-19 still prevalent in the state, she’s advocating for Michigan residents to do their part in preventing the flu, helping save lives.
The flu threatens the health of thousands of Michiganders a year, but luckily has a vaccine to offer some protection to vulnerable populations. Governor Whitmer and her team have launched the “Facing the Flu Together” campaign with a target of 1 million more Michiganders being vaccinated this year, than last year.
Governor Whitmer opted to get her flu vaccine live during a press conference and shared, “Preventing the flu will help us save lives and preserve the health care resources we need to continue fighting COVID-19. Every flu-related hospitalization we see this season will put an additional strain on Michigan’s economy and our healthcare systems and hospitals.”
Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the MDHHS Chief Deputy for Health continued to stress the importance of protecting yourself from the flu, sharing “Part of fighting COVID-19 means getting your flu vaccine this year.”
As Michigan continues to battle COVID-19, opting to get vaccinated for the flu is one of the best ways to ensure your community is protected from experiencing simultaneous outbreaks.
