MICHIGAN — After President Biden signed numerous pieces of legislation to rebuild America, a good problem to have is facing construction firm across Michigan and the country. The problem? Contractors need more skilled trades workers to complete all of the work needed to be done.
Across Michigan, the sight of cranes rising in the air shows that construction jobs are here now. From the Gordie Howe Bridge site connecting Detroit and Windsor to the Soo Locks construction and places in between the need for skilled workers is evident.
A new website seeks to connect those looking for rewarding careers with the contractors in need. A collaboration of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights and Local Jobs Michigan has created a website to get people plugged into the skilled trades, start learning on the job and earning a family-supporting paycheck.
The site www.localjobsformi.com urges those seeking work to sign up to find career opportunities. From there, they are asked which area of the state they’d like find work. Many of these jobs are related to the CHIPS and Science Act signed into law by President Biden in 2022. At the time, Biden and supporters of the bill said the legislation would create 1 million jobs. Biden has also signed The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bi-partisan Infrastructure bill (known as The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act) since taking office.
According the to Center for American Progress:
The three laws pave a promising path forward for American workers and represent a dramatic break from the failed trickle-down economic policies of the past. Trickle-down economics recklessly assumed that tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy would create good jobs but ultimately led to the decline of the American middle class and shrinking opportunities for working families. The economic transformation promised in these bills seeks to reverse that decline.
