MICHIGAN — As the 2026 midterm election begins to take shape, there will some high profile races for U.S. Congressional seats in Southeast Michigan. Due to Representative Haley Stevens leaving her seat in the 11th district to run for the open U.S. Senate seat and Representative John James leaving his 10th district seat to run for governor, there will be at least two open seats for Congress in Southeast Michigan.
Below is a rundown of who is running (or expected to run
District 6
Current Representative: Debbie Dingell, Democrat
At this time there are no announced candidates for the 6th Congressional district. It is widely expected that Dingell will run for re-election.
District 10
With John James leaving the seat open, at least three Democrats are mounting campaigns for this highly competitive seat.
Tim Greimel: The Mayor of Pontiac is making his second run for Congress. Greimel, a former Democratic leader in the Michigan House finished second to Haley Stevens in the 2018 Primary for the 11th district.
Christina Hines: Hines was the Democratic nominee for Macomb County Prosecutor in 2024.
Alex Hawkins: Alex Hawkins began serving in the U.S. Army in 2015. He attended Oakland Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in 2021. His career experience includes working as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer in the Army and as a congressional aide. (from Ballotpedia)
District 11
Haley Stevens is leaving this seat after four terms to run for the open U.S. Senate seat against State Senator Mallory McMorrow, State Representative Joe Tate and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. The seat leans Democratic and the winner of the Democratic Primary Election is expected to win the General Election.
Jeremy Moss: State Senator Jeremy Moss has declared his intention to run for Congress. Moss, a former member of the Michigan State House is a proponent of transparent government.
Possible Candidates for the Democratic Primary also include Oakland County Commissioner Dave Woodward, an aptly named candidate from Oakland County, and former Republican member of Congress, turned Democrat David Trott.
District 12
Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib is expected to run for re-election. Although there are no serious challengers to Tlaib, members of The Squad, a group of progressive members of Congress, have been targeted in past election cycles with members in New York and Missouri losing primaries in 2024.
District 13
Incumbent Shri Thanedar is expected to once again face a stiff primary challenge. Thanedar is running for his third term and looking to benefit from a large field of candidates. Thanedar won the Democratic Primary in 2022 without nearing 50% and easily defeated former State Representative Mary Waters in 2024, despite her support from Mayor Mike Duggan and other prominent Democrats.
Adam Hollier: Making his third attempt at the seat is Adam Hollier. Hollier finished a close second in 2022 in a crowded field and was disqualified for lack of signatures in his 2024 run.
Donovan McKinney: State Representative Donovan McKinney is making his first run for Congress. Donavan McKinney was born in Detroit, Michigan. McKinney earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy from the University of Michigan in 2014. His career experience includes working as the political director of SEIU Healthcare Michigan, as a legislative director in the Michigan State House, as the national political director of Climate Power, and in community engagement for the nonprofit Community Development Advocates of Detroit.
