LANSING — Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave her State of the State address tonight, highlighting her accomplishments including repairing thousands of miles of roads, a child care agreement that has been deemed historic and the repeal of taxes on tampons and lower personal property taxes for small business.
The speech also laid out her agenda for the coming year including:
- Cutting taxes and lowering costs to keep the economy humming
- An increase in education funding
- Repeal of the Retirement Tax passed by the Republican-led legislature and signed by former Governor Rick Snyder
- An increase in the earned income tax credit to help working families
- A bill to lower the cost of insulin
- New investments in Michigan’s mental health workforce
- A $2,500 rebate for EV cars
Governor Whitmer acknowledged the pain families in Oxford continue to deal with after a horrific shooting in November and the victims of COVID-19.
At the end of her speech, Governor Whitmer invited all Michiganders to share her vision for a better state by asking, “Do you believe in Michigan?”
