Upper Peninsula Republicans Choose Anti-Trump State Senator Who Called Out Trump’s Election Claims

MICHIGAN — After the August 2 primary, the Upper Peninsula will more than likely be represented by a state senator who made a name for himself calling out former President Donald Trump for making false claims about Michigan’s 2020 election.

In the 38th District, Senator Ed McBroom easily won his primary as he seeks a second term in the chamber. McBroom was chair of the Senator Oversight Committee tasked with investigating claims that the 2020 election had somehow been “stolen” in Michigan – despite now-President Joe Biden winning the state handily. McBroom’s committee eventually released a report stating that there was no evidence of fraud.

The report read in part, “Our clear finding is that citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of Michigan. There is no evidence presented at this time to prove either significant acts of fraud or that an organized, wide-scale effort to commit fraudulent activity was perpetrated in order to subvert the will of Michigan voters.”

McBroom’s report added a shot at those who perpetuated Trump’s false claims, “The Committee strongly recommends citizens use a critical eye and ear toward those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain.”

McBroom was treated like a traitor to the cause by former President Trump and was called out at numerous Trump rallies. This brought national attention to McBroom who was the subject of an Atlantic article titled, “The Senator Who Decided to Tell the Truth” and other national attention came after the article was published.

The article stated that once the report was released, “Trump issued a thundering statement calling McBroom’s investigation “a cover up, and a method of getting out of a Forensic Audit for the examination of the Presidential contest.” The former president then published the office phone numbers for McBroom and Michigan’s GOP Senate majority leader, Mike Shirkey, urging his followers to “call those two Senators now and get them to do the right thing, or vote them the hell out of office!”

Despite all of Trump’s bluster, McBroom easily won his primary with 77.4% of the vote in his heavily Republican district. McBroom will face Democrat John Braamse.
