NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Representative Neil Friske lost his primary seeking the Republican nomination for state representative on Tuesday in a blowout. Friske, a first term lawmaker, lost to Parker Fairbairn of Harbor Springs 63 percent to 37 percent.
In June, Friske was arrested by the Lansing Police after allegedly firing a gun at a stripper. While not yet charged or exonerated, the story got wide attention across the state and country – giving Fairbairn an opening.
Fairbairn released a statement after his win:
“Limited government, lower taxes, secure borders, a strong economy, and integrity – this has been what our entire campaign has focused on and what propelled us to a historic victory tonight. We the People will once again have a voice in Lansing.
I could not have done this without my amazing wife Victoria’s support and the incredible encouragement of my family along this long campaign trail – what a journey it has been.
To my supporters: Thank you for trusting me with your vote. I’m honored to be your Republican nominee, and I will not disappoint you. We will bring our conservative voice to Lansing and fight for our District’s needs.
To those who did not support my candidacy: I hope to earn your support in the days and weeks ahead. We have a lot of work to accomplish in our state.”
Representative Friske released a statement calling Fairbairn’s win an, “unfortunate outcome.”
Fairbairn will face Jodie Decker, the Democratic nominee, in November. The seat is considered a safe GOP seat.
