MICHIGAN — Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Unlock Michigan, a campaign to stop common sense public health measures, are the subjects of a criminal probe that alleges two non-profits tied to Senate Majority Leader Shirkey failed to properly file and disclose the source of funds that the non-profits funneled to Unlock Michigan.
The two non-profits, Michigan! My Michigan! and Michigan Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility gave a combined $2 million to Unlock Michigan. Former Republican strategist Bob LaBrant filed a complaint with the Secretary of State which in turned referred the matter to Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office for review.
“Shirkey’s scheme involved the illegal use of dark money on a scale never before seen in Michigan as millions of dollars in dark money was raised and spent,” LaBrant stated in his complaint. Instead, LaBrant argues that the non-profits should have filed as ballot committees and disclosed donors.
The Secretary of State’s office stated they referred the matter to the Attorney General when Michigan! My Michigan! and Michigan Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility failed to turn over documents detailing how money was spent.
