Michigan Republican Leader Calls for End of Marriage Equality

LANSING — State Representative Josh Schriver, a Republican from Oakland county, has called for the end of marriage equality in the United States. Schriver, posting on social media, “Make gay marriage illegal again. This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme.”

Schriver, a leader in the Michigan Republican Party, has a history of hateful yet provocative statements. In February, Schriver posted about a theory called the great replacement theory that is commonly referred to as racist speech. Not only did many political leaders call out the state representative but the Northern Guard Supporters a soccer support group posted: “Absolutely go fuck yourself, Josh. Your wife plays for our club with players from all ethnic backgrounds in a high minority population city and you’re pushing white supremacist propaganda. We want to be extremely clear on this: you are not welcome at Keyworth or in DCFC”

Attorney General Dana Nessel challenged Schriver’s assertion on X: “Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else. You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you.”

Representative Jason Morgan who serves in the State House also responded, “”A fellow representative is saying my marriage to the man I love should be illegal. This is definitely both controversial and extreme, along with anti-family. I grew up believing I’d never be able to get married and I’m not going back.”

Marriage Equality in Michigan became law of the land in 2014 when a Regan appointment judge ruled Michigan’s ban unconstitutional. The United States Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in 2015 with Justice Anthony Kennedy asserting, “”No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.”
