Chokwe Pitchford, an active community member of the Benton Harbor area, is State Representative candidate of Michigan’s 79th district.
Growing up, Chokwe experienced hardships far too common amongst working families across Michigan, and our country. The struggles that his family endured, gave him a unique and empathetic perspective towards his community, and provided a clear picture of what needs to be changed.
Pitchford is a health care reform advocate. He’s seen firsthand how devastating the high cost of prescription drugs and health care premiums can be on families. He’s dedicated to fighting for increased access to health care by ending prescription drug price gouging, allowing Medicare to negotiate costs, and ensuring those with pre-existing conditions aren’t denied coverage for their status. He’s seen the devastating effects COVID-19 has had on working families in his community, and wants to ensure their health care coverage is guaranteed no matter what.
He’s also dedicated to strengthening Michigan’s public schools. He believes that we need to dedicate more time, funding, and resources to our teachers, to ensure they have the support they need to thrive. He also believes that students and teachers should be at the forefront of education reform conversations, and will work to ensure they have a seat at the table, especially when sweeping changes are proposed to districts who are struggling.
Dashuna Robinson, Secretary of the Board of Education of Benton Harbor Area Schools announced her support of Chokwe, sharing “Chokwe Pitchford’s energy, determination and commitment as a voice of our community to improve our state healthcare system, strengthen unions, encourage criminal justice reform, and support equity and equal access to education are why I [support] him.”
Finally, Chokwe Pitchford understands the importance of protecting and strengthening Michigan’s workforce. He’ll ensure that workers have adequate access to job training and education. He’ll also fight to strengthen unions, and oppose right-to-work, to ensure all workers can fairly fight for better pay, benefits, and working conditions.
Overall, Chokwe Pitchford has a plan to fiercely advocate for his community, and brings a unique perspective to the Benton Harbor area.
