Democrats Cruise in Special Elections, Regain Michigan House Majority

MICHIGAN — Michigan Democrats handily won a pair of special elections in House Districts 13 and 25 last night to regain full control of the Michigan House of Representatives. The special elections were called after resignations by Lori Stone, now Mayor of Warren and Kevin Coleman, now Mayor of Westland.

In House District 13, Democrat Mai Xiong easily defeated her Republican opponent 65-34. The Warren-based district dealt a blow to Republican hopes that they’d be able to show strength in Macomb County, an area of the state that Republicans must win to have a chance to win statewide.

In House District 25, Peter Herzberg had no problem winning his election as he received 59 percent while his Republican opponent garnered only 38 percent. The district encompasses working class suburbs in Western Wayne County, the type of suburbs that Republicans had hoped to perform better electorally.

Both results followed strong special election results for Democrats across the country in 2024. In both Florida and Alabama, Democrats flipped suburban state house seats from Republican to Democratic and Congressman Tom Suozzi handily flipped a seat in the New York City suburbs earlier in the year.

House Democrats in Michigan will regain complete control once both special elections are certified and Xiong and Herzberg are sworn in.
